Family Folk Art

We had the misfortune to lose a beloved family member this past week. He was a larger than life ..funny talented man with a big heart. The family brought the usual photos and mementos to the service and I was struck by two stunning folk art turkeys he had made out of scraps of wood and twigs. They epitomized folk art! It reminded me again what I keep telling people,,you don't NEED anything special to create art. No fancy tools, degrees,galleries or material. you need to NEED to make something. The fundamental desire to create something that pleases YOU. Whether its functional or just whimsical. True Art can be a beautiful painting or a silly twig turkey that makes people smile and stays tucked in a corner if their hearts!

Christmas snowfall

Well we have finally had our first Real snowfall today. The ground is finally covered in a deep carpet of clean cold white snow. We have the week off so I can enjoy the sight without having to drive in it! I can understand why animals hibernate ...with gray skies and the days being so short it's a struggle not to find a hole under the covers to crawl into until spring!

We had our first snow fall last night (mmm maybe second..I was outta town for the first one) that stuck to the ground. Funny how it chases the grey away and makes the house feel all warm and cozy! ( insert husbands scowl..) I took a class on Viking knit bracelets last night and it was not a fun ride home . The class was interesting and with practice i might really enjoy it! the result wasnt half bad for a first try! I will try and post a picture later. Plus I bought a bunch of beads to finish up the wrap bracelets for Christmas! Maybe after the holidays I can get back to bears! There are a bunch of the poor little guys in pieces all over the house!

Racing winter

Well we are still having great luck with our November weather here in Vt. Considering how much rain we had all summer it's been a joy. True Indian summer. (where did that phrase come from? And is it politically correct anymore? ) I hope it's ok because it evokes images of beautiful crisp sunny fall days with glorious colors. Sharp cold frosty mornings with crunchy leaves that just smell amazing.
We spent the weekend doing some much needed work outdoors. Mainly banking our 175 yr old house with hay bales to keep the wind out of the stone foundation. 40 bales in all. Bless the old farmers who threw acres of them around by hand ! I am exhausted! But twice warmed! Which is what they say about cutting your own wood! Snug until Spring I hope. Maybe I will be able to

Ok because I get excited about new crafts all the time...and have again..let me show you my latest fascination! Wrap bracelets! This is my 2nd one. They are so much fun to make and rather addictive! She who dies with the most mohair wins..and apparently that's true with beads too! LOL.
It's a three wrap bracelet and has a vintage button closure.and since I want to make more and need to support my new habit..this one is for sale!

A Gift of Robins

It is most definitely fall in Vermont and like much of the northeast we have had rain rain rain. Our part of the state was spared most of Irenes' wrath..but I miss the sun! Slow going with the garage construction means we have a muddy torn up mess of a lawn. Which it seems was a blessing to the birds! Expecting a temperature drop soon and that usually means that the birds stock up before they high tail it south! I woke to the sound of Robins this morning! They were dive bombing the yard..playing in the trees..hunting for breakfast in the fresh turned mud. Dozens and dozens of them..along with a few stray redwings and juncos. None of the promised sunshine today ...but true joy in watching and listening to these beautiful creatures! Happy Fall everyone! Fly safe birdies!

The garage is finally progressing! Yeah! The forms go in tomorrow. We need the storage so bad!
Every time o start a project it takes me forever to find anything! I love my old farmhouse but closets and dry storage was never in the plan! It will be such a relief to have room for everything!

First Frost!

Well I expect we will have more color now! Light frost on the ground this morning! I love fall! Can't wait to get out and take more photos this weekend! The sun is finally out! Yea! Was starting to feel like i was living in a Steven King novel! The Chester Vt craft fair was lovely! Damp and rainy but filled with good friends and terrific crafts! Stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast and ate our way across Southern Vt! Something I highly recommend! Lots of Chicken pie supers and craft fairs through out the month. Come and visit folks the roads are fine!

So I only have a week to get my act in gear and finish up some things for the Chester, Vt show and with all the upheaval and remodeling going on all summer.. I can't find a darn thing! Spent several hours trying to find a box of pins so i could pin pieces . Auugh! Can't wait until the garage is finished and I have storage..storage I remember and can find again..without a map and a detective...

House projects have just taken over my summer! One ends another starts! Whew! Can't wait until we can sit back and just enjoy the progress ! We are truly blessed to not be in the dire straits some of our fellow Vermonters are right now though. Our "safe" little state took and awful beating last week. My sisters live on Killington i/e Mendon, Pitsfield..area. Vistas I have known since childhood are gone.. the scope of the damage is breathtaking. 30 ft drops where there should be roads. Washed out banks where our Brooks used to run. I have always loved Vermont but never knew how much she was part of me until now! People have really stepped up to help their neighbors. Strangers turn up to shovel mud and drop off food to people they have never met. States I have never been to have sent utility workers and heavy equipment. Thank you from the bottom of one Vermonters heart for your support , your kind thoughts and the unconditional support you all have offered .

Soooooo...I gave up and enjoyed a truly beautiful cool sunny day! Played with some copper wire curls and the took a few photos in the yard of the Quenn Annes Lace. Then I played with that on my iPad and loved the results!

Taking time for summer

WE have been so busy again this summer with the house and the cars and projects..all of which are not going well..that I forget some days how beautiful summer really is here in Vt. The incessant rain and then the sudden 90 degrees with humidity kind of derailed me! But as I was taking my car back for the second time for repairs ,,no air conditioning in mine so the windows were all done.,The shop is in the country out on a back road. It is such a beautiful drive! Miles of green meadows..deer, rabbits,contented cattle munching away. And the birds! just sitting and listening for a few minutes takes my breath away!
so thank you GOD for making me stop and SEE! It was worth the hassle!

Sitting here this morning thinking about all the other 4th of July celebrations over the years. When we were kids everyone went to the lake,,either a private camp or Lake Dunmore. Cotton candy and ice cream never tasted so good. Swim all day and burned hot dogs and salads to eat later. Watching the fireworks wrapped in some ones too large sweatshirt. The only care in the world was the mosquitoes. When happy childhood memories are so few and far between..does that make them more special?

different! We all basically modified the pattern to our own tastes as we went along. Its fun to work with a group of women! I do things i wouldn't make the time to learn or play with otherwise! Am playing in Jewelry awhile for the summer when I can travel safer at night! We are finally having some truly beautiful weather ( which will be Wednesday and Thursday!) but the sun is out the weather warm but not humid! not a cloud in sight! We do not usually have all the hay fields still up right now but the rain and heavy flooding made cutting hard this year..one of my favorite things about the hill I live on is watching the hay fields move in the wind. Very like watching the ocean! They ripple and sway just like ocean waves in a light breeze. Soothing and special to me. And all those dandelions people try so hard to remove are beautiful strewn by the thousands around the meadows and farm buildings. The deer and turkeys are appearing
nightly.

Copper Bracelet Class

I took another class last night at Bead Crazy in Williston Vt! Such a fun bunch of classes! Ginger is always so warm and friendly! Reasonable cost and tools provided! Last night we learned how to make these beautiful hammered copper bracelets! And with some scrap pieces we made earrings and I made these little pendants ( cant wait to add the chain and beads!) Great way to learn new techniques and make gifts!

Not the rain..not the sun...nothing in VT. Comes in moderation any more! Weird! My dental work is on hold for awhile. My DH bought his tractor finally. He's over the moon. It's used but just what he wants at the moment . There are 3 guys hanging off my house repointing the brick ( thank you God for help that shows up!) they show up with grinders and ladders and scaffolding at 7 a.am. Then he decides to go for the refinancing and putting up a garage this year. Yeah. I love my old house but face it folks they have NO storage! And we have STUFF! I was beginning to worry about being one of those people who has a path through the piles of newspapers that you read about.. Buried under their collecting ! Maybe I will even have garden someday like the one over at Snowy Day Bears (see my blog list)

Seeing Green!

No not my hair this time..finally have someone we trust repairing the brick on the house. Re pointing etc. was a bit freaked out when I got home from work and there are all these metal plates and huge lag screws holding the brick facing to the house frame. Please let these be temporary... the green I am seeing will be dollar signs otherwise. I adore old houses. Scares my husband to death..the more of a wreck it is the better. I just want to save them all..we are too old and too poor at this point to do that! ( for comfort anyway!) I cant even keep this one clean at this point! Yes we hace named the dust bunnies!

Okay so the good news is that over the years I have learned to take most things in stride..and vanity has no longer rules my life completely... my favorite
hair color product revamped all their colors. Resulting in my choosing poorly what color my head is lately! This last time I went darker to counter the gold in the 2 other attempts .. And Voila! I am a redhead! If Ronald McDonald needs a few days off..I' m good to go as a replacement. Sigh... I remember crying myself to sleep the first time I cut and permed my waist length hair! And if I dig out the box I bet now I can tell you almost exactly the color of Reilly's mohair! I wonder what next week will bring?!

A Lovely 3 days in Maine!

sooo nice to get away for a bit and to have absolutely no rain! The 80 degrees was too much for me but hey at
least we were in Maine near the ocean! Did lots of antiquing , checked out the flea markets. Had great company ( my DH!) and wonderful food. Have to take a photo of the new little Herman bear I bought. I was looking for doll sweaters..the vintage ones..but of course because I was looking there were none to be found! Isn't that always the way? Missed my doggies but they were having fun splashing in the wading pool with the other kids when dad picked them up! now back to work!

I say this tongue in cheek because I have just had another dental procedure. A failed attempt to save a cracked tooth,,which means I will now have another extraction tomorrow. Soon the heading will be where are my teeth! So I have been working on small projects this afternoon while my drugs wear off. Nothing to large..trimmings faces..some shading etc. Tried to drink some water when I first got home..lips didn't work..would have laughed at the water dribbling down my face..but... MY LIPS DON'T WORK! Thank heavens that finally wore off.! What an odd feeling!Come to think of it..some people might be please that my mouth was frozen! Hope to be back with another bear picture tomorrow!

Going where we've already been! No we only spotted a place we wanted to stop AFTER we missed the exit to it! But easy fix! The mud sale photos are downloaded. This is a Huge outdoor sale held by the fire dept's in PA as fundraisers. Last year we baked in the heat and red dust , the year before it Poured!! This year cool but nice ...early rain made the requisite mud..orange sticky clay mud that I promptly slipped and fell in! Good food ..good sales!

So we finally got out of Dodge! The storm was a no show thank heavens! Was nice to just take our time and relax, but pretty tired from the long week. Made a few silly mistakes, got a quick tour of Syracuse. And then after swinging back around the signs said" right lane ends and the next line says left lane ends. So I'm thinking .. No lane left ...right?!

I had a need to make this to wear on St Patrick's day in honor of my paternal grandfather Henry Travers. He was a rather mysterious figure in my childhood, My father did not live with him but with the Aunt and Uncle we grew up with, Bur he would often pick us up after school and give us a dollar bill and a Hershey's candy bar. He fixed the tree lights every Christmas,,came at Easter and posed for pictures with us in our Easter Finery. He was an electrician ( hence the little light bulb ) and a chauffeur , a railroad man , a trapper and a handy man at many of the large Vt/ NH resorts. ( like the Equinox in Manchester , Vt) Irish in every sense of the word and not very

chatty. ! Many fond memories of him but also many questions!

I am still not completely happy with this but I am working it do death at this point! So here it is , one of my favorite Ancestors, Pearl was actually my fathers Great Aunt but one of the 2 we grew up with in our lives, She was quite a character for her time. she up and hitch hiked to California when she was very young, She married twice more and lived there all the rest of her life. She was never a svelte woman but she loved to laugh and rabbit hunt with a shotgun from the running board of a car in the desert. And she loved her tea! She came every year to visit with a tea pot and cozy! The first item of the plane was to stop and send a case of Red Rose and Salada tea home, along with a case of Moxie! The scent of her perfume still makes me homesick.

sooo..in an attempt to make Terrys' family reunion information more accessible I designed a blog for them. The thought is to get more people connected online and maybe make the information sharing more personal and more frequent. That was the plan. I keep hitting a wall with how to get anyone to actually contribute to the thing! Seems the "comment" part is more confusing that I realized. So have included at tutorial. I am following a fairly regular schedule of posting. Any thoughts on how I can make this more of a Family undertaking?

Sometimes I complicate my own life by volunteering for things that seem soo simple....Have to get my husband to keep the duck tape handy! :)

Hearts Ease Bears new blog

After much thought I have decided to clear out my website and transfer it to a blog. It suits my lifestyle better at this moment and I like the interaction you have on a blog! So while it's a work in progress it is up and running and once I get the Domain name routed correctly I will focus on adding more new content! Namely BEARS! Much work to do before the April show in NH! There are robins appearing in greater numbers in Vt this week so hopefully spring is finally on its way! I may just kiss that groundhog!

helpless husband debate

So the big question for this week..are husbands as helpless as they appear? How do grown men who have so many skills,,so much common sense..throw it out the window when faced with the simplest task? I have debated with myself ..wondering if a capable female somehow just flips a switch in their heads ( nope no need to worry about that..she can do it!) ,,do we need to be the stereotypical blonde?! Used to be if I had a hammer in my hand WHAMO he showed up behind me hovering,,whatya doin? Why don't you let me do that? ( why didn't I say yes?Because I am a modern independent women! I do not nag..I don't make lists..(ok I nag about his health) I want him to have free time to enjoy himself..but when I send him to the store for 2 items,,I want the 2 I asked for! I am still very much in love with my husband after 15 years! I am a very laid back person. I asked him to change the kitty litter for the first time (maybe 2nd) ever with consequences I don't want to describe! Suffice to say he locked the cat out of the litter pan by putting the lid on backwards ( I didn't know you could put in on backwards!)

It's what makes us laugh after year sof marriage and I wouldn't actually kill him or trade him in but banging my head on a wall every now and then..that I do!

Sometimes life and time constraints just seem to overwhelm me. Like there isn't time for ME,

and I know I made that possible all by myself! The snow has been plentiful in Vermont this year,,great for the skiers and tourists. But I think the after the holidays and no sunshine blues set in. I have been working diligently this week on another project I volunteered myself for! It's turned out to be quite fun, my husbands family is French Canadian and they hold periodic reunions, print newsletters etc. soooo I saw a blog as the natural progression. ( a what?) You know a blog..:}

Boy is it ever! we have well over a foot now. Our 35 minute ride turned into closer to an hour last night, And here we go again this morning! We made one gross miscalculation with the new floor. Both doors go straight outdoors...( I know duh) so the weather comes IN with both dogs, and i spend all my time mopping up after dogs and husband! I'm getting them for my feet!!!!

Paper Whimsy

I was inspired by the new "bits" over at Paper Whimsy to make a Christmas card with my DH again as Santa! He had often mentioned how much fun he had playing Santa when the kids were small, that I had a suit made for him for his birthday. It has seen alot of Christmases since then and brought us much joy! the watch is from CRenee gold theory elements and behind Santa is also CRenee French countryside paper, The rest is fro Paper Whimsy!

I know what love looks like

I know what love looks like and so i' m
Sure do you . A child held in your arms, a hug from a sibling , that special look from a spouse., but every once in awhile I see love professed in a way that is almost transcendent . A moment etched in my mind that leaves a warm glow behind. On vacation in Maine this summer we went to a flea market . My husband and I admired a lovely old fedora that one of the elderly female vendors was wearing. She laughed and said it was a wonderful old hat but it wasn't for sale , it belonged to her husband. Now we had noticed him in a peripheral sort of way but as he came over to join the conversation I could see his hat was a bright purple knit cap! They explained that she had washed the purple cap and it stretched and would not given the windy day stay on her head. So they switched .
He gave her the fedora and he wore the purple knit so she would not be cold . Each tenderly adjusted the others hat from time to time to be sure they were warm . And I saw Love
This Thanksgiving my husband and are in Pennsylvania Dutch Country as always. There are dozens of wonderful places to eat and we chose a favorite rather later we should have . Without reservations we sat at small coffee counter and had a terrific meal with the chatter and hum of couples and families all around us. An elderly couple to our left picked slowly at their meal stopping to watch the antics of the children as we did. His eyesight wasn't what it used to be and he cradled a cane . I was amused that like my husband hers was hard of hearing and her small quavery voice didn't carry well in the crowded dining room. Why not just change seats to be on his "good" side we wondered? But what struck me; was the way she lovingly cradled his chin in the palm of her hand and turned his face toward her .. Cheek to cheek .. To speak directly into his ear . They smiled and talked in this fashion throughout the meal . She waited on him , bringing first the salad , then the meal and finally dessert . Slightly impatient with his pace but never with him. And again I saw Love.
I know what Love looks like and Feels like and I am profoundly thankful for that in my life and wish all of you the same in yours !

well it is definitely fall in Vermont! The deer hunters are out in force, although most of them are not using their car as we did. The old girl comes back today,, all her repairs newly finished!

Hard to believe you can miss a car huh? Vacation In PA very soon,, time off to explore and relax! yeah! And maybe get to finish up some craft projects to share with you!

Unfortunately we didn't see the deer coming and hit it. Ran right over us almost! I don't believe we killed it as it walked off on its own and the couldn't find it after a thorough search..so that's good.but Terrys' poor car! Ruined the power steering so we had to be towed..bent up the right front corner good..shattered the wind deflector on the hood. Terry seems to think that blunted the impact. NOT a way to start your morning folks!

Weekend in Maine

Well we finally managed a quick weekend get away to Maine after such a busy summer! Much too short but we had great weather and ate terrific food,,did some shopping and much antiquing! I found a couple of small treasures to make me happy! There was a lovely Harvest Festival in York.

Wish I had taken my camera in..there were the coolest chain saw bears! And everyone has apple crisp! warm...yum!

Our granddaughter attends West Virginia University at Morgantown and has decided to join Bike Across America for MS in honor of her aunt Cindy who was diagnosed with MS. Please help her in any small way you can in this worthy cause. We are very proud of her and any young person willing to give up their time and energy to do something so special!

Lost in Revamping my site!

Thought it would be a simple thing to update my site with a Halloween look. HAH! Outsmarted

myself again! I had a minor female related surgery this week so I fortunately had the time to try and sort out the mess I made "tweaking". Didn't get back to where I started but..making progress!

It was rather like one of those fun house mirrors..where every time you look you have something stretched a different way!!! Maybe I need another nap! The drugs they give you really goof up your thought process'!

Check back in awhile we may need to organize a seance to get me back!

every year we have this cool "wall of corn" that grows along both sides of the road on the way to our house, it's beautiful (and tall as you can see by the car) and we love it.. but a sure sign of fall is when they start cutting the swathes to dry it,,its coming down tonight! Goodbye corn until next year! I love the country!
